The Best Thing in Life

By Acharya Sachidananda on 20-03-2010

was one of my ‘best friends’ in the Air Force. We had lots of fun together
during those years of ‘wine, women and music’.
Destiny took me into a different path and I left the Air Force in 1989
to become a ‘Sanyasi’ according to the Chaturashrama Parampara.
He retired in 2006 as an Air Vice Marshal. We were meeting after almost 30
years. I was traveling across India in 2007.

was rather excited to meet him. He looked to have grown gracefully old. He was
one of the ‘cool cats’ in our group, always moderate in drinking, partying, and
talking. All of us had liked him, perhaps I liked him the most.

came to know of my presence in Delhi from his daughter who was among the
students who listened to my talk in her college the previous day.

was a bit confused about how to address me! The Principal walked in just then
to offer her hospitality. ‘Swamiji .. can I send you two gentlemen some
tea.. ?’  she asked me.  That seemed to have settled my friend’s
confusion. He started calling me ‘Swamji’.  He was always like that, graceful and proper
in all things.. Years have only added to his gracefulness.

what do you think is the best thing in life?’ ….
he asked.  The question came as a
pleasant surprise to me. It was the same question I had asked him 30 years ago
over a drink in the Officers’ Club. He was a kind of ‘guru’ for all of us at
that time.

do not know that yet’…. I told him frankly.  ‘But I know one thing,  it cannot be bought with money, neither can
it be acquired with power’  I added.

about an hour of heart-to-heart talk he left to attend an official function.
That night I could not sleep for a long time. I was reflecting over the
question. Finally I dozed off. Towards morning I had a dream.

the dream I saw myself walking in a grave yard looking for the ‘living Spirit
of God’. I walked for a long time. Then I heard a voice ….‘Look to your

looked and saw a bright shining sun, so soothing to the eyes… and so joyful to
the heart…. A kind of divine bliss came upon me. ‘It is the living Spirit of
Christ’ the voice told me.

woke up.  I got the answer that I was
searching for. The best thing in my life is the ‘living Spirit of Christ’ which
is the ‘Holy Spirit’ of God.

recollected with great joy and gratitude the divine providence that brought me
in touch with the living Spirit of Christ soon after my encounter with death in
the air crash way back in 1982. I also recollected with joy and gratitude the
wonderful ways in which I was guided during these last 28 years by the living
Spirit of Christ…
